Nobody Tells Students This About Their First

Salary

One of the most common questions I hear from commerce students is:

“Sir, how much salary can I expect after B.Com?”

It is a fair question. After all, students and parents invest time, effort and money into education.

However, after working with commerce students for more than 25 years, I have realised that many students focus on the wrong question.

Instead of asking about their first salary, they should ask:

“What skills will help me increase my salary every year?”

A student’s first salary is important, but career growth is much more important.

I remember a student who joined ITAP a few years ago. During counseling, he was only interested in salary discussions. After joining the Professional Business Accountant (PBA) Course, he started learning Accounting, GST, Income Tax, TDS, Tally Prime and Excel.

Within a short period, he realised that practical skills create opportunities. Today, his income is far higher than what he was originally expecting because he focused on learning rather than only earning.

This is why I tell students that the best career options after B.Com are those that provide practical business skills.

Companies reward professionals who can solve problems, handle compliance and support business decisions.

The Professional Business Accountant (PBA) Course at ITAP Pune is designed around this philosophy. Students learn practical accounting and taxation work that businesses actually require.

Do not chase your first salary.

Build skills that will increase your salary for the next 20 years.
